Trying to catch up

   I think I've admitted before that I became aware of Dylan largely from other artists' covers of his works.  The Kingston Trio, PP&M, Jimi, Baez (although in the latter's case, I was already aware of Bob, and their relationship, but found her treatments of his songs more listenable).

Now, something completely weird

   I remember trying to watch this movie (VHS rental, 35+ years ago).  This is a quite bizarre performance - feels rushed - but I do like the double-time bass solo at the end. 

    I hope Venus and Mars are alright.

IIRC, the AOR DJs of the '70s utilized this pairing if they needed to visit the loo...

A brilliant segue, and one of my favorite Seger performances.

Another pairing I remember - but I have trouble verifying this - was Ronstadt's cover of Phil Everly's When Will I Be Loved, followed directly by Willin' (Lowell George/Little Feat cover).

To this day, Linda's album named for this song remains my favorite.  While I didn't initially like this version as well as hers, I now value them equally.

The album was produced by Jackson Bowne, featuring Don & Glenn, Lindsey & Stevie, Waddy, Phil Everly, wünderkind multi-instrumentalist David Lindley and Rosemary Butler, Bonnie Raitt, Carl Wilson, and several stellar session players - a who's who of the L.A. scene in the '70s.

I feel a bit like a plagiaristic schlub posting the same song as another, venerable, blogifier, but this is a version I really dig.

   While I was certainly acquainted with the composer's version of this song, even back in the '70s, I always preferred this one. This is the non-airplay version with the otherworldly, trippy extended bridge.

   Continuing the theme of mid-20th century musicians re-creating the magic in the 21st, I herewith present this duo. Two voices and a guitar. 

Really a gem once you get past the vapid banality of the morning gabfest 'personalities'.

Edit: In that same time frame (late February '75), my [junior HS] running buddy Marcus and I spent an evening in our Leningrad/St. Petersburg hotel bar committing diplomacy with some CCCP sailors (and their wives/girlfriends) on shore leave, while a Russian band bravely attempted several covers of Western rock music, including - naturally - some by the Fab Four.  After one of our hosts had admired my western bolo tie (with a horse head, originally from JC Penney's in Irving, TX, IIRC), most of the evening, I gifted it to him or his girlfriend (hence, diplomacy). It was probably the pinnacle act of détente, or the seminal moment of гласность.

Even in communist countries, leeching from your citizens - no matter how much you claim to be doing it 'for their own good' - is considered poor form. At some point, people who have eyes to see and brains to think, see the light and act. There comes a time when people don't buy the BS anymore and break out of their apathy, even - maybe especially - as the aging despot desperately tries to consolidate and project power.
