Musically, I like the tune but I find it an odd sentiment; sort of splitting hairs to make a profound comment. I dunno, it sounds bitter.
Yeah, if you dissect it lyrically, the narrator (Henley) comes off a bit presumptuous or arrogant. The response contrasts against the initial tableau, as the female (McBride) reveals no ulterior motives. I think you're correct about it musically. It has some interesting tempo shifts and a good guitar solo.
